I am Emily Edelenbos and I was born in Baltimore, Maryland. I have lived in the same house for my whole life, and despite having a lot of heritage (I'm a European mutt, basically a blend of everything that can't tan), I often feel culturally barren. I associate mostly with my Dutch culture, mostly because my living grandfather was born in Amsterdam.

"a blend of anything that can't tan"- Hahaha I'm right there with you! My mom is Italian, and she is even more pale than my white dad, so I'm out of luck. :(
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you too. I'm German/Irish and who knows what else. But "a blend of anything that can't tan" is a great way to sum it all up. I used to always be jealous of those who could either tan easily, or not have to tan at all.
ReplyDeleteI'm a mutt. Italian/Greek/German/Irish. At last I'm tan though. Even though I'm mostly German I probably identify with that the least. I'm really big in my Italian Heritage but that is mostly because that is the part of the family I see pretty much daily (we're very close-knit). But I couldn't imagine my life without having my heritage play a role in my life. At least you probably don't get stereotyped constantly though.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger, I moved around a lot. Between first grade and my freshmen year of high school I had already been in five different schools and three different houses. It must be nice to have one true place to call home!
ReplyDeleteI am also a "European mutt." The only really solid culture I have being Ukrainian from my mom's side. My dad, on the other hand, is a mix from all over so I have no idea what his true identity is...
ReplyDeleteI am going to Amsterdam hopefully this upcoming year, I have oddly enough have family there, who knew central americans would move to the Netherlands??
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing that you've lived in the same house your whole life(to me at least)...and I bet there's a lot more to your "culture" than you think...everything affects it

Your little brother skates? Thats pretty cool, but yeah im german/irish too its cool to see some people from here that have the same heritage.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly how you feel! I'm Guyanese and I'm a mut of everything...there is no one culture that I can really identify with!
